Bullying Prevention

The Milton Middle School will be utilizing the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program for the 2009 – 2010 school year.  The goal of this program is to  change the norms around bullying behavior as well as to restructure the school setting itself so that bullying is less likely to occur or be rewarded.  Again, the goals of the program are:

          * to reduce existing bullying problems among students

          * to prevent the development of new bullying problems

          * to achieve better peer relations at school

It is important to keep in mind that the implementation of this program needs to be seen as a long-term effort and not something that is “completed” in a year.

WEB/Boomerang Transition Program

The purpose of the WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) program is to guide 6th grade students academic and social successes in the middle school setting through students helping students.  8th grade peer mentors will be assigned to our incoming 6th graders to provide a school climate where everybody belongs.  The WEB leaders go through extensive training and model positive behavior for their younger peers.   6th graders feel safe, cared for, and supported by creating an atmosphere free of  bullying, intimidation and fear while replacing it with connections and giving students a sense of comfort and belonging.

Feel free to share any thoughts, comments, or concerns you may have at this time.  Communication is a key component  to our students’ success.
